The College of Chemical Engineering at the University of Technology organized a scientific visit to the Midland Refineries Company / Al-Dora Refinery. The visit was supervised by the professor of the Environmental Pollution course, Professor Dr. Thamer Jassim Mohammed, with the participation of Master’s students from the Chemical Processes Engineering and Petroleum Refining and Gas Engineering departments.
The visit aimed to activate the bonds of joint scientific cooperation between the University of Technology and the practical industrial reality.
The visit included acquainting the students with the reality of operations and environmental treatments for environmental pollution in the refinery and the analysis of pollutants, and linking the theoretical material with the practical reality. The students were received by the Training Department and the Public Relations Department. They visited the Environment Department in the refinery and were briefed, field and practically, on the laboratory analyses of industrial and oil water pollutants used in all petroleum operations, and the stages of treating contaminated industrial oil water, which include primary physical treatments and viewing sedimentation basins, the method of collecting settled oil pollutants and how to deal with and recycle them, as well as chemical treatments for pollutants and the method of adding chemicals, coagulation and flocculation basins, and precipitators. The students also learned about the final biological treatments for discharging water into the river within environmental limits, in addition to the treatment of polluted gases and how they are burned.
The Master’s students expressed their deep gratitude to the course professor, Professor Dr. Thamer Jassim Mohammed, for his efforts in linking the practical applied aspect with the theoretical material and for closely acquainting them with the operational units used to treat pollution in oil refineries.
