
Biomedical Engineering College Organizes Lecture on the Dangers of Smoking
The Biomedical Engineering College at the University of Technology, in collaboration with the Psychological Counselling and Educational Guidance Unit, organized an awareness lecture entitled: “The Dangers of Smoking and its Effects on the Health of the Individual and Society.” The lecture was delivered by the head of the unit, certified trainer Engineer Manager Ammar Abbas Kadhim, in the presence of college students.
The lecture aimed to educate students about the various health, psychological, and social harms resulting from smoking, both for smokers themselves and for individuals affected by passive smoking. The workshop also addressed the increasing risks associated with modern means of smoking, particularly electronic cigarettes, emphasizing the need to avoid them due to their potentially hidden and dangerous negative effects.
The lecturer presented recent statistics illustrating the extent of the phenomenon in society and clarified the relationship between smoking and chronic diseases such as heart and lung diseases and cancers, in addition to its effects on mental health and general behaviour.
The lecturer emphasized the importance of the students’ awareness-raising role within the university community and the necessity of their responsibility in spreading a culture of health awareness and striving towards a smoke-free university environment that contributes to promoting public health and encouraging positive behaviors.
The lecture concluded with an open discussion, during which the attendees showed great interaction through their interventions and inquiries, which gave the session a purposeful interactive character, emphasizing the importance of such activities in building sustainable health awareness among university students.
