Department of Architecture organizes an online workshop on preserving Mosul’s heritage.

The workshop is organized in coordination with the Young Architects Club, a volunteer architectural student team, as part of the Architecture Season initiative, which aims to organize various scientific and academic activities.

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Technology, Professor Mohsen Nouri, and the supervision of the Head of the Department of Architecture, Prof. Dr. Abbas Ali Hamza, and based on the importance of preserving cities’ cultural heritage, the department organized an online workshop entitled “Historic Preservation of Cities: Mosul as a Model.”

The department Faculty and students attended the workshop.

The workshop hosted Australian Professor Benjamin Isakhan, a global researcher specializing in cultural heritage issues, who presented an in-depth analytical perspective on the reality of post-conflict cities, using Mosul as a living example to highlight the challenges and opportunities facing the reconstruction of damaged cities.

Head of Urban Design Branch, Lec. Dr. Lina Ghanem Yaqoub, and Asst. Lec. Orans Abdul Wahid Alwan moderated the panel session.

The workshop addressed several pivots, including:

  • The impact of war on Iraqi cultural heritage: material and moral losses, and the destruction of cities.
  • Challenges and opportunities for rebuilding devastated areas.
  • The importance of building people and communities as a precursor to city reconstruction.
  • Rebuilding holy sites and their societal role.
  • Presenting historical experiences of cities that passed the same Mosul experienced conditions.
  • Urban design, youth, and local community participation in the reconstruction process.

The workshop concluded by emphasizing the vital role of universities and students in raising vital issues and actively contributing to shaping the future of our cities.
