Asst. Prof. Dr. Haider Jassim Issa, a faculty member in the Department of Architectural Engineering at the University of Technology, participated as a member of the examining committee for the Master’s thesis entitled “Exploring the Correlations between Urban Street Networks and Land Use Patterns in Heritage Areas of Baghdad through a Space Syntax Approach.” The thesis was presented by Master’s student Aya Furat Mohammed.
The discussion took place in the Mohammed Makiya Hall in the Department of Architecture at the University of Baghdad.
The thesis aimed to explore and identify the nature of the correlational relationship between the configurations of urban street networks and land use patterns within the heritage areas of Baghdad, focusing on the old Al-Rusafa district. This was achieved by employing advanced Space Syntax methodologies.
The researcher sought to provide empirical evidence illustrating how the spatial characteristics and structural configurations of street networks influence the distribution of land uses and the resulting impacts on urban function, spatial accessibility, and heritage preservation efforts.
The thesis concluded by presenting its final findings, which emphasized the necessity of improving the structure of markets and the connectivity between markets and urban areas. It also highlighted the need to develop supportive programs for local crafts and industries, enhance urban security, and improve street design in terms of visual safety and the activation of active frontages such as cafes and shops to create a safer and more vibrant environment. Furthermore, the thesis stressed the importance of increasing the efficiency and reliability of public transportation and establishing and expanding pedestrian zones to encourage walking and achieve better urban safety.
