The Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering Organizes a Scientific Visit to the Sib’a and Gharaf Oil Fields in Dhi Qar
As part of the ongoing scientific visits organized by the Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering at the Technological University, a field trip was arranged to the Siba and Gharaf oil fields in Dhi Qar, in collaboration with the Dhi Qar Oil Company. The visit included third-year students, accompanied by the department’s head, Assistant Professor Dr. Moayed Mohammed Hassan, and faculty member, L. Mohammed Ghazi Khaled.
On the first day, the students visited the Siba oil field, where they were greeted by the field’s engineering team. The visit began with an introduction to occupational safety and regulations, a necessary prerequisite before the field tour. The students were then shown the drilling rig and its key components through explanations from the engineers. The presentation covered the rig’s operation, including its cooling system, drilling tools, and the mechanisms used for oil transport and the associated drilling operations. After the tour, the students moved to the surface facilities near the site, where the engineering team explained the function of the separation system, which includes receiving crude oil from the drilling rig and passing it through various separation stages before producing oil ready for export.
On the second day, the group visited the Gharaf oil field, where the main operator is the Chinese company “Petronas,” with “ZPEC” responsible for drilling operations, along with a team from the Dhi Qar Oil Company. The visit began with a review of safety procedures and requirements, followed by a detailed explanation from the operating engineers about the drilling rig and the nature of the work, highlighting how the students benefit from understanding the associated drilling operations.
It is worth noting that these ongoing scientific visits provide students with valuable, up-to-date practical knowledge from experts in the oil sector, which helps prepare them for future entry into the job market.
