The Department of Civil Engineering Holds a Workshop on “Enhancing Sustainability in Construction Through the Use of Advanced Materials and Innovative Technologies”

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Hassan Al-Ghaban, the Department of Civil Engineering organized a workshop titled “Enhancing Sustainability in Construction Through the Use of Advanced Materials and Innovative Technologies.”

The workshop was presented by Dr. Riyad Al-Mahdi, a construction expert from Swinburne University in Australia, and was moderated by Prof. Dr. Maen Salman Hassan. The event was attended by the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Ali Majid Khodair, Administrative Assistant, Prof. Dr. Wael Shouqi Abdul-Sahib, and a number of specialists from both public and private sector companies, including engineers from companies such as Sika, Fosroc, DCP, Lafarge, Jadara, Mapin, Al-Ahmed Construction Laboratory, and Al-Khayal General Contracting Company.

From the government sector, several engineers from the Ministry of Construction and Housing, the Baghdad Municipality, and specialized professors from public universities attended, along with faculty members, in the Al-shahid Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis Hall.

The workshop aimed to introduce new building materials and technologies used in strengthening structures that have been damaged due to aging or due to exposure to emergency factors causing harm.

The materials discussed included types such as polymer-strengthened carbon fibers, polymer-strengthened basalt fibers, polymer-strengthened glass fibers, among others.

The workshop also included case studies from both inside and outside Iraq, focusing on bridges repaired using fabric or sheet layers of these materials, which enhance their structural capacity and functional performance.

The workshop concluded with the presentation of a shield to Dr. Riyad Al-Mahdi by the Head of the Department, in appreciation of his efforts in delivering this valuable workshop.
