University of Technology Secures Second Place in Iraqi University Swimming Championship
The University of Technology clinched the second place in the Iraqi University Swimming Championship, which concluded on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at the swimming pool of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Baghdad in Al-Jadriya. The championship was organized by the Student Activities Department of the Scientific Supervision and Evaluation Apparatus at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, in cooperation with the Iraqi University Sports Federation, and hosted by the University of Baghdad, with the participation of several universities.
The University of Technology team successfully secured the runner-up position in the championship, which saw the participation of 53 universities, after accumulating 50 points. They trailed behind the University of Baghdad team, which claimed first place with 7 points more. The University of Al-Farahidi came in third with 33 points, followed by Mosul in fourth place with 25 points.
The University of Technology swimmers achieved remarkable results in individual events, winning 5 medals out of 7 events. These included two gold medals for student Hassan Ali in the 50m and 100m freestyle events, a gold medal for student Ali Maher in the 50m backstroke, and a silver medal in the 100m backstroke. The university team also won a silver medal in the 4x50m freestyle relay.
Individual and team awards were distributed to the winners by the President of the University of Baghdad, Dr. Baha Ibrahim, the Director of the Student Activities Department at the Ministry of Higher Education, Dr. Ammar Hamid, the President of the Iraqi University Sports Federation, Dr. Riyadh Khalil, and the Scientific Assistant of the University of Baghdad, Dr. Suhail Najm. Shields were also presented to the attendees.
This championship marks the first of its kind in the field of university swimming championships in Iraq since the establishment of the Student Activities Department. It was conducted by a refereeing team from the Iraqi Central Aquatic Sports Federation.
The University of Technology swimming team delegation consisted of Abdullah Adnan as the head, Asst.Lect.Mustafa Mahdi as the coach, and 5 swimmers: Hassan Ali Khalil from the Department of Communications Engineering, Ali Maher and Jaafar Baqir from the Department of Civil Engineering, Reza Muhammad from the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Hussam Mustafa from the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
