Scientific Workshop on the Importance of Cyber Security and Its Applications
Under the supervision of the Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Alaa Kadhim Farhan, the Department of Computer Science, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, organized a scientific workshop titled “The Importance of Cyber Security and Its Applications.” The workshop was presented by Brigadier General Dr. Hassan Hadi Ladhid, the Director of the Cyber Security Center at the Ministry of Interior, on Monday, March 3, 2025, in the late Dr. Imad Kazem Hall at the Department of Computer Science building. The event was attended by department heads from both public and private universities, the Scientific Assistant in the Department of Computer Science, Assistant Professor Dr. Mustafa Jassem, the Head of the Data Security and Cybersecurity Branch, Dr. Rana Mohammad Hassan, and a large number of professors and students.
The lecturer began by defining computer security as a branch of information security that focuses on computers and networks, aiming to protect information and assets from unauthorized access, theft, and damage.
Transparency and the disclosure of security vulnerabilities were highlighted as essential factors in enabling users to protect their data. Allocating resources was discussed as one of the biggest ethical dilemmas in cybersecurity, with institutions required to make decisions about how to allocate resources such as time and human capital.
The lecturer also addressed surveillance technologies and data collection methods, noting that while they are important, they may violate individual privacy rights. Therefore, it is crucial to establish strict legal and ethical frameworks to govern data collection.
At the end of the session, the Head of the Department awarded the lecturer a trophy and a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his efforts in delivering the workshop.
